Taken together, the Renaissance frescoes at the Met, the May ’68 graffiti slogans, and Warhol’s Cow Wallpaper were clues to an alternative direction away from the self-contained object.This is not to suggest that these three events alone constituted the sole impetus for the turn to the wall. For its second project Triple A is pleased to announce a new wall painting by Berlin based artist Cyprien Gaillard. Referencing the memorial murals found throughout the city of Los Angeles, the work transposes the text adorning Caspar David Friedrich’s grave marker in Dresden, Germany on to a gritty wall just south of the Santa Monica Freeway. Through this act of displacement, Gaillard pays tribute to the great painter of romantic landscape in a present-day setting that is, in its own way, also a landscape of romance . TripleA is a two-year public art project initiated by François Ghebaly, Emma Gray, Al Moran, Justin Beal, FloraWiegmann, and Drew Heitzler. Eight internationally recognized artists have been asked to create a single color image to be painted at large scale on the exterior wall of a former muffler shop that sits at the corner of Venice Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles California.The wall, situated in the Culver City gallery district, home to many of Los Angeles’s most important art galleries, also sits at one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in Los Angeles.This location of- fers high visibility to both arts professionals and the larger general public.
In addition to the wall painting, each artist will create a suite of silkscreen prints in an edition of ten.The inaugural project, a wall painting by NewYork based artist Nate Lowman, opened in October, 2011.The current wall painting, by Cyprien Gaillard will be on view through March, 2012.
