Jeane Cohen: Wing in the Shadow

Press Release
François Ghebaly New York is proud to present Wing in the Shadow, a solo exhibition by Jeane Cohen at the gallery’s Lower East Side location. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Easy Does It.
Moving between New York City and the sweeping Maine coastline, Jeane Cohen shares in her painting practice vivid, connective interpretations of the natural world. Her work stands at the intersection of observation and dynamic, painterly invention. Experiments in color and gesture echo vast, impressionistic silhouettes of landscapes, flora and fauna, and, on occasion, the human figure. For her latest exhibition, Wing in the Shadow, Cohen expands on a body of work first presented in 2023 at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. In her paintings bees, wolves, elephants, and loosely anthropomorphized figures inhabit lush, frenetic environments that feel at once otherworldly and intimately familiar. Integral to these works is an encompassing sense of discovery, both in terms of Cohen’s often improvisational methods for arranging compositions, and also in terms of the viewer’s experience of interacting with and deciphering Cohen’s open- ended gestures. “I often think my paintings look to flesh out the terrain that sentient beings move through–making sense, or not, of the living world,” she has noted. Cohen’s work insists on a deep engagement with the world around us, underscoring the connective power of feeling and sharing in nature.
