Farah Atassi
French-Syrian artist Farah Atassi’s (b. 1981, Brussels, Belgium) intricately composed paintings are in direct and open conversation with the world of the modernists. In gridded planes and vivid, staccato geometries, her works recast the feminized subjects of twentieth-century avant-garde painting—the bather, the female nude, the still life—within her own visual universe and sensibility. Engaging with the legacies of masters like Braque, Schlemmer, Picasso, and Léger, Atassi interpolates canonical elements of abstraction into her own signature formalist vocabulary. With elegance, precision, and an obligatory wit, Atassi’s work looks to reexamine the conceits and illusions at the heart of the modernist image.
Farah Atassi lives and works in Paris, France. Recent solo exhibitions include François Ghebaly, Los Angeles, USA; Musée Picasso, Paris, France; Almine Rech, Shanghai, China, Paris, France, and New York, USA; Le Consortium, Dijon, France; Fines Arts Museum of Cambrai, Cambrai, France; Museum Permeke, Jabbeke, Belgium; and Contemporary Art Center, Le Havre, France. Her work has been featured in group presentations at Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon, Lyon, France; National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, Romania; Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia; Biennale of Painting, Roger Raveel Museum, Machelen-Zulte, Belgium; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Kobe, Japan; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France.
